Nendeks eritisteks on sülg ja köhides, aevastades, rääkides või lauldes suust erituvad tilgakesed. Kuid kas passiivse suitsetamisega võib saada koroonaviiruse?
Lühike vastus on: see on võimalik. Kuigi passiivse suitsetamisega koroonaviiruse levikut pole veel uuritud, siis samasugused eelmainitud tilgakesed levivad ka suitsetamise ja veipimisega. «Kuna uudne koroonaviirus levib inimeselt inimesele kontaktiga, siis lähedast kontakti (vähem kui kaks meetrit) hõlmavaid maskita tegevusi tuleks vältida,» ütles doktor Lyou, «Suitsetamiseks peab inimene maski maha võtma, mistõttu on see kõrge riskiga keskkond kõigile lähedal viibivatele inimestele.»
Kuigi pole tõendeid, et suits levitab viirust kaugemale, pole doktor Onugha sõnul turvalist distantsi, mida soovitada suitsetajate lähedal seisvatele inimestele. Ta soovitab viiruse edasikandumise riski vähendamiseks näomaski kanda.
Suitsetajatel endil on suurem koroonaviirusesse nakatumise risk. Tubakakontrolli uuringute ja hariduse keskus California ülikoolis San Franciscos tegi 19 suitsetamise ja koroonaviiruse kulgemise teadusartikli põhjal ülevaateuuringu. 17 uuringut olid Hiinast, üks Koreast ja üks Ameerika Ühendriikidest. Leiti, et suitsetamine kahekordistas koroonaviiruse progresseerumise tõenäosust.
Mais teatas Maailma Terviseorganisatsioon, et «suitsetajatel kulgeb võrreldes mittesuitsetajatega tõenäolisemalt koroonaviirus raskemalt». Hoolimata koroonaviirusest, peaksid mittesuitsetajad passiivset suitsetamist vältima. «Uuringud on näidanud, et passiivne suitsetamine on seotud suurema kopsuvähi ja südame-veresoonkonnahaiguste (südameatakk ja insult) riskiga,» selgitas doktor Lyou. «Isegi lühiajaline kokkupuude sigaretisuitsuga võib halvendada eelnevaid kopsuhaigusi, nagu astma ja krooniline obstruktiivne kopsuhaigus.»
